Southside is privileged to be a participant with our local Habitat for Humanity chapter and other churches and volunteers in building homes for families in our community who might not otherwise be able to purchase their own home. Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry, funded by tax-deductible contributions and aided by thousands of volunteers. Lexington Habitat for Humanity is a partnership between families who would not otherwise be able to purchase their own homes and caring people who in our community who donate their time, talent, and dollars to the building of Habitat homes. Families provide their own "sweat equity" as a down payment and assume a non-interest bearing 20 year mortgage. There is no profit added to the sale of homes. We are working to replace the cycle of poverty in our community with dignity and hope by providing a "hand up", not a "hand out". By having people from all walks of life work together, Habitat for Humanity builds not only houses, but new relationships, and a spirit of teamwork. Project 2001: The build site will be 452-454 Kenton Street, for a family with four grandchildren aged between 10 and 14. We will work every Saturday between September 15 through October 27. To volunteer, see the forms located in the Communications Centre at Southside or contact Derek Van Meter. Southside will provide breakfast, lunch and snacks on September 22, contact Kelly Ferguson to help. To learn more join us at a pre-build meeting to be held at 10:45 AM in the Cats' room at Southside, on Sunday, September 9.
